It connects the city of Howrah, specifically at Bally, to Kolkata, specifically at Dakshineswar. The bridge, completed in 1931, is a multispan truss bridge that was constructed primarily to facilitate direct road and rail connectivity between the Calcutta Port and the major railhead at Howrah railway station on the western bank of the Hooghly River.
